Famotidine works by blocking histamine H2-receptors. Famotidine completely blocks histamine’s action on parietal cell H2-receptors. It suppresses gastric acid secretion in the basal, overnight, and pentagastrin-stimulated states. Famotidine’s H2- receptor antagonist activity is reversible because the drug dissociates slowly from the H2-receptor.
