Description
Indications
Adults, adolescents, and children 6 years of age and older with reversible obstructive airway disease should use levosalbutamol for the treatment or prevention of bronchospasm.
Pharmacology
Levosalbutamol is a beta 2-agonist with a single isomer that differs from racemic salbutamol by the absence of (S)-salbutamol. Levosalbutamol is an efficient bronchodilator, and (S)-salbutamol has no influence on its principal mode of action. When compared to racemic salbutamol, clinically equivalent bronchodilation can be achieved at dosages that reduce beta-mediated adverse effects significantly.
Dosage & Administration
Tablet-
- Adults and adolescents above 12 years: 1-2 mg three times daily.
- Children (6 -11 years): 1 mg three times daily.
Syrup-
- Adults: 5-10 ml three times daily.
- Children (6-11 years): 5 ml three times daily.
Interaction
With Levosalbutamol, other short-acting sympathomimetic bronchodilators or epinephrine should be taken with care. If any extra adrenergic medications are to be given, they will be given with caution to minimize negative cardiovascular consequences.
Contraindications
Patients having a history of hypersensitivity to levosalbutamol or any of its components should avoid using it.
Side Effect
Hypocalcemia, palpitation, tiny skeletal muscle tremors, and muscular cramps are all possible side effects. Nausea, vomiting, searing substernal or epigastric discomfort, and diarrhea are all possible side effects.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Only if the possible benefit outweighs the danger to the fetus should the medication be taken during pregnancy. Levosalbutamol is not known to be eliminated in human milk. When administering oral Levosalbutamol to a breastfeeding lady, use caution.
Precautions & Warnings
In acute severe asthma, extra caution is suggested since hypoxia and concurrent therapy with xanthine derivatives, steroids, and diuretics might amplify this impact. In such cases, serum potassium levels should be checked.
