Side Effects
When given in recommended doses to patients with normal renal function and urinary output, this solution is generally well tolerated with no unpleasant side effects. To avoid hyperkalemia or alkalosis, as with any alkalinizing agent, caution should be used in certain patients with abnormal renal mechanisms. Intoxication with potassium causes drowsiness and weakness.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There is no information on the use of this drug during pregnancy or lactation.
Precautions & Warnings
In patients with low urinary output, the solution should be used with caution. To reduce the risk of gastrointestinal injury associated with the oral ingestion of concentrated potassium salt preparations, it should be diluted thoroughly with water and taken after meals. In the presence of renal disease, large doses can cause hyperkalemia and alkalosis.
