Magaldrate is used to treat dyspepsia, heartburn, acid reflux, sour stomach, gastroesophageal reflux, hiatal hernia, and flatulence. It is also used to treat hyperacidity caused by peptic ulcers, gastritis, and esophagitis. If required, children can be administered Magaldrate.



Magaldrate is a hydroxymagnesium aluminate complex that is rapidly transformed in stomach acid to Mg(OH)2 and Al(OH)3, which are poorly absorbed and so offer a long-lasting antacid action.


Dosage & Administration

Tablet: 1-3 tablets, after meals and at bed time or as directed by the physician.

Syrup: 2 to 3 teaspoonful, 3 or 4 times daily, half to one hour after or before meal and at bedtime



Magaldrate is not recommended for people who have a history of hypersensitivity to magnesium or aluminum. It is also not recommended for people with poor renal function.


Side Effects

Constipation and diarrhea are possible side effects.


Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnant women: Magaldrate may be taken throughout pregnancy if warranted, however excessive dosage should be avoided.

Lactating mothers: Magaldrate has been observed to transfer into breast milk but has not been linked to any problems in nursing newborns.


Precautions & Warnings

Magaldrate may reduce the absorption of a number of drugs including anticholinergic agent, ketoconazole, digoxin, quinine, warfarin, tetracycline and vitamins. So it should not be taken concomitantly with these drugs .If these drugs are prescribed with antacid, there should be a gap of at least 1 to 2 hours in taking them.
