Description
Nabumetone is prescribed for the treatment of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. Before deciding to use Nabumetone, carefully consider the potential benefits and risks of the drug as well as other treatment options. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time possible in accordance with the treatment goals of each individual patient.
Pharmaceutical Name
Pharmacology
A naphthylalkanone is nabumetone. Is a non-selective prostaglandin G/H synthase (a.k.a. cyclooxygenase or COX) inhibitor that inhibits both prostaglandin G/H synthase 1 and 2 in the body (COX-1 and -2). Arachidonic acid is converted to prostaglandin G2 and prostaglandin G2 to prostaglandin H2 by prostaglandin G/H synthase. The precursor to a number of prostaglandins involved is prostaglandin H2.
Administration & Dosage
For osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, a single dose of 1,000 mg taken with or without food is recommended as a starting dose. From 1,500 mg to 2,000 mg per day, some patients may experience more symptomatic relief. Nabumetone is available as a single or twice-daily dose. There hasn’t been any research done on doses higher than 2,000 mg per day. For chronic treatment, the lowest effective dose should be used.
Interaction
According to some reports, NSAIDs may reduce the antihypertensive effect of ACE inhibitors. In patients taking NSAIDs and ACE inhibitors at the same time, this interaction should be taken into account.
Contraindications
In patients who have a known hypersensitivity to nabumetone or its excipients, nabumetone is not recommended. Patients who have had asthma, urticaria, or allergic reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs should not be given napumetone. In these patients, anaphylactic-like reactions to NSAIDs have been reported, which are rarely fatal.
Side Effect
Diarrhea (14%), dyspepsia (13%), abdominal pain (12%), constipation, flatulence, nausea, positive stool guaiac, dry mouth, gastritis, stomatitis, vomiting
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Classification C. There was no evidence of developmental abnormalities in rats and rabbits in reproductive studies. Animal reproduction studies, on the other hand, are not always predictive of human response. In pregnant women, there are no adequate, well-controlled studies. Nabumetone should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit outweighs the risk to the baby.
Precautions & Warnings
Nabumetone will not be able to replace corticosteroids or treat corticosteroid deficiency. The abrupt cessation of corticosteroids may cause the disease to worsen. If a decision is made to discontinue corticosteroids, patients who have been on them for a long time should have their therapy tapered slowly.
