Description
Generic
Olopatadine Hydrochloride
Indications
Olopatadine is used to alleviate ocular irritation caused by allergic conjunctivitis.
Pharmacology
Olopatadine is a histamine H1 antagonist that suppresses the in vivo and in vitro type 1 acute hypersensitivity reaction, including suppression of histamine-produced effects on human conjunctival epithelial cells. Olopatadine has no impact on alpha, dopamine, or muscarinic type 1 and 2 receptors. Olopatadine was shown to have little systemic exposure after topical ocular application in humans.

Side Effects
Headaches have been observed to occur at a rate of 7%. The following side effects have been observed in fewer than 5% of patients: Asthenia, blurred vision, burning or stinging, cold syndrome, dry eye, foreign body feeling, hyperemia, hypersensitivity, keratitis, lid edema, nausea, pharyngitis, pruritus, rhinitis, sinusitis, and taste distortion are all symptoms of hypersensitivity.
Pregnancy & Lactation
In pregnant women, there are no appropriate and well-controlled trials. Because animal studies are not necessarily predictive of human reactions, pregnant women should only use this medication if the possible benefit to the mother outweighs the potential danger to the fetus.
It is unknown if topical ocular treatment would result in enough systemic absorption to generate measurable amounts in human breast milk. Nonetheless, while administering Olopatadine Hydrochloride ophthalmic solution to a nursing mother, extreme caution should be taken.
Precautions & Warnings
Contact lens irritation should not be treated with olopatadine HCl ophthalmic solution. Soft contact lens wearers should be encouraged to wait at least ten minutes after injecting Olopatadine Hydrochloride ophthalmic solution before inserting their contact lenses.
