Pharmacology

Chlorhexidine is a broad-spectrum cationic chemoprophylactic drug that works against both gm+ve and gm-ve microorganisms. Depending on the concentration, it can be both bacteriostatic and bactericidal. The bactericidal action is owing to cationic binding to negatively charged bacterial cell walls and extra microbial complexes, which are obtained at high concentrations. Low amounts produce a bacteriostatic action, altering the osmotic balance of bacterial cells and causing potassium and phosphorus leakage.

Dosage & Administration

Chlorhexidine Gluconate cream is used by healthcare professionals during a physical examination. Some will be spread onto the gloved hand of the examiner and some will be applied around the birth canal and perineum of the patient. This cream is for use on the skin or vagina only.

If you’re taking or have recently taken any additional medications, you should get medical advice. Fabrics that have previously come in touch with Chlorhexidine preparations may produce brown stains when bleached with hypochlorite.
