Indications
- Silymarin (Milk Thistle) is used to treat and prevent a variety of conditions, including liver disease (non-alcoholic & alcoholic)
- Cirrhosis of the liver (non-alcoholic & alcoholic)
- Infectious hepatitis is a type of hepatitis that is spread through the
- Hepatitis caused by drugs
- Diabetes mellitus causes liver damage.

Pharmacology
The biologically active component is Silymarin, a flavonoid compound found in Silybum marianum, or Milk thistle. It promotes protein synthesis, antioxidant activity, anti-fibrotic activity, and possibly anti-inflammatory or immunomodulating actions while providing hepatocellular protection through toxin blocking at the membrane level.
Dosage and Administration
1 capsule 2 to 3 times daily or as directed by a physician.
Interaction
Lipid peroxidation has been reduced when silymarin and butyrophenones or phenothiazines are used together.
Contraindications
Patients who have a known hypersensitivity to silymarin should avoid it.
Side effects
In the recommended dose, it is well tolerated. A minor laxative effect may occur on occasion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There is no evidence that Silymarin 70 mg or 140 mg can be used during pregnancy or lactation. As a result, if needed, Silymarin 70 mg or 140 mg should be used with caution and only as directed by a physician.
