Description

Generic

Glucosamine Sulfate + Chondroitin

Indications

As a dietary supplement, it is indicated for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee, hip, spine, hand, and other joints. It can also help with rheumatoid arthritis, sports injuries, migraines, psoriasis, vascular issues (such as atherosclerosis), kidney stones, and inflammatory bowel illness (e.g., ulcerative colitis, leaky gut syndrome).

Pharmacology

Glucosamine is a naturally occurring amino-sugar that is generated by the body and present in a variety of meals. It’s the most basic building component for glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) like Hyaluronic Acid, Keratan Sulfate, and Chondroitin Sulfate production. GAGs bond to proteins to produce proteoglycans, which are an important component of articular cartilage. Osteoarthritis develops when cartilage in a joint deteriorates. It also assists in the formation of ligaments, tendons, nails, and other connective tissues. When we take a supplement containing chemically manufactured Glucosamine Sulfate, our body’s Glucosamine levels rise, making cartilage synthesis and repair easier.

Chondroitin Sulfate is a glycosaminoglycan (acid muco polysaccharide) present in connective tissue, particularly in all animals’ articular cartilage. Chondroitin Sulfate is similar to Glucosamine Sulfate in that it also serves as a proteoglycan substrate. Chondroitin also protects healthy cartilage from early deterioration by inhibiting the MMP (Matrix metalloproteinase) enzyme, which breaks down proteoglycans.

Dosage & Administration

  • Under 54 Kg: 1000 mg Glucosamine Sulfate & 800 mg Chondroitin Sulfate per day
  • 54 Kg to 91 Kg: 1500 mg Glucosamine Sulfate & 1200 mg Chondroitin Sulfate per day
  • Over 91 Kg: 2000 mg Glucosamine Sulfate & 1600 mg Chondroitin Sulfate per day.

750/600 mg tablet: 1 tablet two times daily or as directed by the physician.

Interaction

Antibiotics, antidepressants, antihypertensives, nitrates, antiarrythmics, anxiolytics, hypoglycemic drugs, antisecretives, and antiasthmatics have all been shown to have substantial pharmacological interactions with glucosamine and chondroitin. Chondroitin may help anticoagulants like Warfarin and Heparin thin the blood more effectively.

Contraindications

Glucosamine and Chondroitin have no recognized contraindications. However, documented hypersensitivity to Glucosamine and Chondroitin (e.g., allergies to shellfish or sulfur) is a contraindication.

Side Effect

There have been no adverse effects reported in trials using Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin Sulfate. Side effects that occur infrequently (such as mild and reversible intestinal flatulence) are virtually identical to placebo.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Supplementing with Glucosamine Sulfate or Chondroitin Sulfate is not recommended for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. The effects of glucosamine and chondroitin on a growing fetus have not been thoroughly investigated. Glucosamine and Chondroitin usage during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been studied. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, it should be used with caution and medical guidance.

Precautions & Warnings

When using Glucosamine, patients with Diabetes Mellitus should test their blood glucose levels on a regular basis. In individuals with renal or hepatic impairment, no particular investigations were conducted. For these individuals, the toxicological and pharmacokinetic profiles of Glucosamine and Chondroitin show no limits. Patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment, on the other hand, should be administered under medical care. Glucosamine and Chondroitin should not be given to children.
