Indications

This is used to treat dyspepsia, heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach, gastroesophageal reflux, and hiatal hernia, among other things. It’s also used to treat hyperacidity caused by peptic ulcers, gastritis, or esophagitis. If necessary, magaldrate can be given to children. Flatulence, stomach distension, and windy colic are also treated with this medicine.

Pharmacology

Magaldrate and simethicone are combined in this product. Magaldrate (magnesium aluminum compound, i.e. Hydroxymagnesium Aluminate) is a substance that swiftly neutralizes gastric acid while maintaining a pH of 5-6. Pepsin activity in gastric secretion is also reduced. Furthermore, the other component of Marlox Plus, simethicone, allows the gas bubbles to agglomerate and provide relief from flatulence.

Dosage & Administration

Tablet: 1-4 chewable tablets, 20 to 60 minutes after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by the physician.

Suspension: 2-4 teaspoonfuls (10-20 ml) of suspension, 20 to 60 minutes after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by the physician.

Interaction

It should not be used in patients who are taking Tetracycline in any form. A number of medicines, including propranolol, isoniazid, prednisolone, and naproxen, may have their bioavailability or absorption slowed by the drug.

Contraindications

Patients who have a known intolerance to magnesium or aluminum should avoid magaldrate. It’s also not recommended for people who have kidney problems.

Side Effects

Side effects affecting the gastrointestinal tract are infrequent. Diarrhea, constipation, or regurgitation may occur if an excessive amount is ingested.

Pregnancy & Lactation

If necessary, magaldrate can be used during pregnancy, however excessive dosage should be avoided. Magaldrate has been found to transfer into breast milk but not to create problems in breastfeeding babies.

Precautions & Warnings

Care should be taken for decreased kidney function, hypophosphatemia, and weak people.
