Pharmacology of Feripon 500mg Tablet
Deferiprone is a chelating agent that has an affinity for ferric ions (iron III). The combination of deferiprone and ferric ions forms a neutral 3: 1 complex (deferiprone: iron), which is stable over a wide pH range. Compared to iron, deferiprone has a lower binding affinity for other metals such as copper, aluminum, and zinc.
Feripon 500mg Tablet Dosage & Administration
Adult: 25 mg/kg tid. Doses >100 mg/kg daily are not recommended.
Child: >6 yr: 25 mg/kg tid.
May be taken with or without food.
Interaction
Avoid using deferiprone with antacids containing aluminum because it can chelate trivalent metal ions.
Contraindications
Agranulocytosis, pregnancy and lactation.
Feripon 500mg Tablet Side Effects
Musculoskeletal and joint pain; GI disturbances; red-brown discoloration of urine; transient liver enzyme abnormalities; zinc deficiency; neutropenia and agranulocytosis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
