Description
Indications
Skin infections caused by Staphylococci, Streptococci, Corynebacterium minutissimum, and other Fusidate sensitive organisms are treated with Sodium Fusidate Ointment. Impetigo, boils, abscesses, varicose ulcers, skin grafts, hidradenitis, infected wounds, sycosis barbae, paronychia, folliculitis, carbuncles, and erythrasma are the most common indications.
Pharmacology
Sodium Fusidate, an antibiotic produced from Fusidium coccineum, has a broad spectrum of action against gram-positive bacteria. Sodium Fusidate is highly sensitive to Staphylococci, even strains resistant to penicillin or other medicines. The therapeutic efficacy of topically applied Sodium Fusidate is attributed in part to the antibiotic’s strong antibacterial action against the bacteria that cause skin infections, and in part to its unusual ability to penetrate intact skin.
Fusidic acid is an antimicrobial substance that inhibits the production of proteins in microorganisms. By stabilizing the ribosome-guanosine diphosphate elongation factor G-complex, it obstructs the translocation process. This inhibits aminoacyl t-RNA from binding to the ribosome and, as a result, prevents more amino acids from being transferred to the developing polypeptide.
Dosage & Administration
Sodium Fusidate Ointment or cream is applied to the affected areas 2 to 3 times daily, generally for a period of 7 days. It can be used with or without a covering dressing. Caution should be observed when applying Sodium Fusidate Ointment near the eye region as this preparation may cause irritation if it gets into the eye. No special dosage modifications or special precautions are required for children.
Contradiction
Known hypersensitivity to Sodium Fusidate, and severe hepatic failure.
Side Effects
The Sodium Fusidate Ointment is highly well tolerated, and hypersensitivity responses are quite rare.
