Indications of Cuvir

Cuvir is used to treat keratitis caused by Herpes simplex.

Cuvir is an antiviral drug that is extremely active in vitro against Herpes simplex virus types I and II, as well as Varicella zoster, but has a minimal toxicity to mammalian cells. After entering a herpes-infected cell, acyclovir is phosphorylated to form the active molecule Acyclovir triphosphate. The presence of the virally encoded thymidine kinase is required for the first stage in this process. Acyclovir triphosphate inhibits and feeds the herpes-specific DNA polymerase, inhibiting viral DNA synthesis without interfering with normal cellular processes.

Dosage & Administration of Cuvir

The dosage for all age groups is the same. A 10 mm ribbon of the ointment should be placed inside the lower conjunctival sac five times a day at approximately four hourly intervals. Treatment should continue for at least 3 days after healing

Patients who are known to be hypersensitive to Acyclovir or Valacyclovir should avoid using it.

Side Effects of Cuvir

Superficial punctate keratopathy is a very frequent condition. This did not need an early end to therapy, and the wound healed without complications. Conjunctivitis, a transient mild stinging of the eye that occurs shortly after application. Blepharitis is a rare condition.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Category B pregnancy. Acyclovir has not been studied in pregnant women in a sufficient and well-controlled manner. It is unknown whether Acyclovir used topically is excreted in breast milk.
