Pharmacology of Ariprazole 10
Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic with action on both dopamine and serotonin receptors. It improves schizophrenia symptoms by acting as a partial agonist of dopamine D2 receptors. It’s a dopamine system stabilizer, according to the label. It’s a partial agonist for 5-HT1A receptors and an antagonist for 5-HT2A receptors. This is linked to a reduction in depressed, cognitive, and adverse symptoms.
Dosage & Administration
For Schizophrenia: 10 to 15 mg, once daily, without regard to food. Dose increment should not be made before 2 weeks, the time needed to achieve steady state.
For Bipolar mania: 30 mg, once daily, without regard to food.
Interaction of Ariprazole 10
When used with other centrally acting medications and alcohol, aripipazole should be used with caution. Aripiprazole clearance may be increased by carbamazepine, resulting in lower blood levels. Aripiprazole can be inhibited by ketoconazole, quinidine, fluoxetine, or paroxetine, resulting in higher blood levels.
Contraindications
Patients who are hypersensitive to aripiprazole or any of its components should avoid using it.
Side Effects of Ariprazole 10
Constipation, asthenia, nausea, dyspepsia, vomiting, coughing, and stomach discomfort are all symptoms of asthenia.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Because no human trials have been conducted, aripiprazole should not be taken during pregnancy. If a patient is on aripiprazole, they should not breastfeed their child.
Precautions & Warnings
Aripiprazole may be related to orthostatic hypotension (orthodic dizziness).
Patients with known cardiovascular disease (myocardial infarction or ischemic heart disease, heart failure or conduction abnormalities), cerebrovascular disease, or conditions that predispose the patient to hypotension (dehydration, hypovolaemia, and treatment with antihypertensive drugs) Aripiprazole should be used with caution. 4,444 patients treated with aripiprazole developed epilepsy. Like other antipsychotics, aripiprazole should be used with caution in patients with dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease.
Aripiprazole is not approved for the treatment of patients with dementia-related mental illness.
