Indications of Acyvir 5

Acyvir 5 is indicated for the treatment of Herpes simplex keratitis.

Pharmaceutical Name

Aristo vision

Acyvir 5 is a highly active antiviral agent against herpes simplex virus (HSV) types I and II and varicella-zoster in vitro, but it is less toxic to mammalian cells. Acyclovir enters herpes-infected cells and is phosphorylated into the active compound acyclovir triphosphate. The first step of this process requires the presence of virus-encoded thymidine kinase. As an inhibitor and substrate of herpes-specific DNA polymerase, acyclovir triphosphate prevents further viral DNA synthesis without affecting normal cell processes.

Dosage & Administration of Acyvir 5

The dosage for all age groups is the same. A 10 mm ribbon of the ointment should be placed inside the lower conjunctival sac five times a day at approximately four hourly intervals. Treatment should continue for at least 3 days after healing

Acyclovir is contraindicated in patients known to be hypersensitive to Acyclovir or Valacyclovir

Side Effects of Acyvir 5

Very common: superficial punctate keratopathy. This does not require early termination of treatment and healing and no obvious sequelae. Common: Slight and transient eye irritation and conjunctivitis appear immediately after use. Rare: Blepharitis.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy category B. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of acyclovir in pregnant women. It is not known whether topical acyclovir will be excreted in human milk.
